U.S. Dietary guidlines Flashcards
What organizations are responsible for determining nutrient needs in the U.S.?
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
Who writes the nutritional guidelines for the U.S.?
Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine
What are the goals of DRI?
Geared to prevent outright deficiency and reduce risks of chronic disease.
Identify quantities of nutrients a person requires to optimize health.
What is a DRI?
An umbrella term for a set of dietary guidelines for dietary standards
Name the DRI for micronutrients?
Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)
Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)
Adequate Intake (AI)
Tolerable Upper Intake Limit (UL)
Name the DRI for macronutrients.
Estimated Energy Requirement (EER)
Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR)
What does EAR measure?
Average daily intake to meet the needs of half the population of a particular group of healthy people only.
What does RDA measure?
Meets the needs of majority of the people within a particular category.
What does AI measure?
Recommended average daily nutrient intake level. Used when there is no EAR or RDA.
What does UL measure?
Highest average daily nutrient intake level likely to pose no risk of adverse effects to most people.
What does AMDR measure?
Ranges of energy intakes from Macronutrient that are associated with reduced risk of chronic disease while providing adequate intake of essential nutrients.
What is the AMDR range for carbohydrates?
45-65%
What is the AMDR for proteins?
10-35%
What is the AMDR for fats?
20-35%
What does EER measure?
Average amount of calories needed to maintain energy balance in a healthy adult.
