the US constitution is contained in a single document that was created just after the country gained independence. Contains a set of laws that are higher laws and it is entrenched

the application of extra, legal, safeguards to a constitutional provision to make it more difficult to amend or abolish it

federalism
theory of government by which political power is divided between a national government and state governments, each having their own areas of substantive jurisdiction

principle that the scope of federal government should be limited to that which is necessary for the common good of the people

a fundamental and ‘organising’ idea that runs throughout the constitution e.g. democracy and accountability
separation of powers
a theory of government whereby political power is distributed among the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, each acting both independently and interdependently
