1934 Federal Housing Act
Manuals and practices codify channeling funds to white neighborhoods and ‘block busting’. Redlining.
1935 Social Security Act
Did not include farm or domestic workers , 68.75% of blacks were in those fields.
There was also a minimum income requirement.
Part of compromise to get southern white congressmen to vote for it.
1944 GI Bill
Provided low interest mortgages and funds for education to vets.
Of the first 67,000 Lon’s, 100 %went to white recipients.
20,000 black vets who applied to colleges were unable to find spots.
HBC’s (historically black colleges) grew but could not meet the demand. Most state college still segregated. UNC first accepted blacks in 1973???
