What are some infections that can be bacterial or viral?
Pneumonia
Ear infection
What are the disadvantages of using antibiotics?
Diarrhoea Oral thrush Nappy rash Allergic reaction Multi resistance
How might you tell if a child is at the peak of their illness or not?
Ask parents - are they getting better?
Review by parents
What is rhinitis?
Very common, 5-10 per year
Winter months
Self-limiting condition
Rhinitis is a prodrome to which other illnesses?
Pneumonia, bronchiolitis
Meningitis
Septicaemia

What is otitis media?
Common
Self-limiting
Infection of the middle ear that causes inflammation (redness and swelling) and a build-up of fluid behind the eardrum
Spontaneous rupture of the drum
Typically 3 days of symptoms but can last up to 7
How might otitis media look?
Erythema
Bulging drum
Loss of normal light reflex
What causes otitis media?
BACTERIAL OR VIRAL
Primary viral infection
Secondary infection with Pneumococcus/H’flu
When do you treat otitis media?
Severe uni and bi lateral = >6 months, severe pain >48hrs
Non-severe bilateral 6-23 months

Should you use augmentin?
No
Benefits do not outweigh harm
So how do you treat OM?
Analgesia works for sure
The jury is out for antibiotics
- Antibiotics may work >24 hours
- First do no harm?
The end point is the same
