what are 7 URTI infections?
sinusitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, acute epiglottitis, rhinitis
what agents may cause URTI?
virus or bacteria
what are some viral infective agents which may cause URTI?
adenovirus influenza A,B parainfluenza I,III respiratory syncytial virus rhinovirus
what are some bacterial infective agents which may cause URTI?
Haemophilus Influenzae Moraxella Catarrhalis Mycoplasma S aureus Streptococci
What is rhinitis?
inflammation of the inside of the nose
what are some characteristics of rhinitis?
- occurs most often in winter
- normal nose is pink, red=infection
- prodrome to pneumonia, bronchitis, meningitis, septicaemia etc
what is otitis media?
Infection causing inflammation and fluid buildup behind the eardrum
What are characteristics of otitis media?
- erythema and bulging eardrum
- primary viral infection
- secondary bacterial infection with pneumococcus
- may cause spontaneous rupture of drum
when should otitis media be treated?
- if severe pain for >6months for >48hours
- if non-severe BILATERAL pain in 6-23 month old
what is the main problem with giving antibiotics in otitis media?
antibiotics start working at day 2/3 but pain is most intense on day 1
How long does earache in otitis media tend to last ?
roughly 8 days
what is the pain way to tackle pain in otitis media?
analgesia
What is the main thing to work out in tonsillitis?
- whether viral or bacterial
- do throat swab to see
what is the treatment of tonsillitis?
- 10 day penicillin if bacterial/ nothing if viral
- do not prescribe AMOXYCILLIN
what is croup also known as?
laryngotracheobronchitis
