Urology & Tumors of the Urinary Tract Flashcards
Clear Cell carcinoma - Epidemiology
Most common type of renal cell carcinoma (70-80% of all renal cell cancers)
3rd most common urologic malignancy
Characteristics of clear cell carcinoma
Arises from renal cortex, most often presents as a single tumor
Has a propensity to invade the renal vein and can extend into the IVC and heart
Fuhrman’s Criteria
Nuclear grading classification for clear cell carcinoma tumors
Varies from 1-4 with grades 1-2 carrying a better prognosis than grades 3-4
Papillary carcinoma - Epidemiology
10-15% of all renal cell cancers
Characteristics of papillary carcinoma
More frequently multifocal (unlike clear cell carcinoma)
Better prognosis than clear cell carcinoma
Chromophobe Renal Carcinoma - Characteristics
5% of renal cell cancers
Derived from intercalated cells of collecting duct
Excellent prognosis
Collecting duct (Bellini duct) Carcinoma
<1% renal epithelial neoplasms
Arise from collecting duct cells in the medulla
Poor prognosis
