what is doxazocin and how does it work
Alpha blocker
selective for alpha1-adrenoreceptor
found in smooth muscle, vessels, urinary tract
blockade causes relaxation, reduced resistance to bladder outflow
indications for doxazocin use
1st line in prostatic hyperplasia, where lifestyle changes are insufficient
add on treatment in resistant hypertension
side effects of doxazocin
prominent first dose hypotension
postural hypotension, dizziness, syncope
what class of drug is finasteride?
5-alpha reductase inhibitor
how does finasteride work
inhibits the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone
over time leading to reduction in size of prostate
what are the side effects of finasteride?
anti-androgen activity - impotence, gynaecomastia, reduced libido
hair growth
how long may it take for finasteride to have an effect?
up to 6 months
