Doxazosin (Cardura, Doxadura)
Alpha-1 receptor blocker
Mechanism of Doxazosin
Relaxes the muscles of blood vessel walls, muscles around the prostate gland and ladder exit
Indications of Doxazosin
Hypertension
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Contraindications of Doxazosin
Urinary incontinence Postural Hypotension Due to have cataract Surgery Heart failure Pulmonary oedema Elderly
Side effects of Doxazosin
Incontinence in women, arrhythmias, asthenia, chest pain, cough, nausea and vomiting
Interactions of Doxazosin
Any drugs reducing BP likely to increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect of Doxazosin
Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar)
5-Alpha reductase inhibitor
Mechanism of Finasteride
5-alpha reductase is present in muscle and converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is involved in BPH. Finasteride prevents conversion of testosterone.
Indications of Finasteride
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Alopecia in men
Side effects of Finasteride
Increase risk of breast cancer Breast swelling or tenderness Impotence Decreased libido Reduced ejaculate volume
Elimination of Finasteride
- Excreted in semen nd can feminize male fetus so wear a condom if partner is likely to be pregnant
- Broken or crushed tablets are not to be handled by women who are pregnant as drug can be absorbed through skin
Interactions of Finasteride
Interferes with Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening test for prostate cancer
