Urolithiasis Flashcards
Nephrolithiasis
formation of stones in the kidneys.
Patho of Urolithiasis
Characterized by the presences of stones in the urinary tract, where they cause excruciating pain.
Ureterolithiasis
Formation of stones in the ureter.
Formation of stones involves:
- Slow urine flow, resulting in supersaturation of the urine w the particular element that first becomes the stone.
- Damage to the lining of the urinary tract.
- Decreased amounts of inhibitor substances in the urine that would otherwise prevent supersaturation & crystal aggregation.
Hydronephrosis
enlargement of the kidney caused by blockage of urine lower in the tract and filling of the kidney w urine
Nursing interventions for urolithiasis
Pain management, prevention of infection and urinary obstruction
Lithotripsy
Use of sound, laser, or dry shock waves to break the stone into small fragments.
Measures to prevent stone obstruction include
high fluid intake (3 L/day) and careful measures of intake and output.
