- removes nitrogenous wastes and other harmful substances
- controls osmosis to achieve water and salt balance
- organ involved: kidneys, gills, skin, part of the digestive system, salt glands

- Produce and release gametes, bring them together, provide nourishment to young
- Gonads, ducts, cloaca, copulatory organs

What is Pronephros?
A
- part of the kidney
- appears in all vertebrates but degenerated quickly
Functional in fish larvae, adult hagfish and some teleosts

A
- reduced segmentation
- all or most of the mesomere posterior to pronephros forms one kidney

- never segmented
- kidney of adult amniotes
- Metanephric kidney is drained by a new duct
