Urine Elimination Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of the kidney
A
- remove waste products from the blood and play a major role in regulation of fluid/electrolyte balance (urine formation)
- stimulate RBC production (erythropoietin)
- blood pressure control (RAAS)
- produce prostaglandin (vasodilation)
- converts vitamin D into active form (calc + phosphate regulation)
2
Q
Function of the Ureter
A
carries urinary waste to bladder
3
Q
Function of the bladder
A
- serves as temporary reservoir for urine
- the urge to void occurs when the bladder fills to 150-250ml
4
Q
Function of the urethra
A
transport urine from bladder to exterior of body
5
Q
Gerontologic Considerations
urine elimination
A
- diminished ability of the kidney to concentrate urine
- decreased bladder muscle tone = reduced bladder capacity
- decreased bladder contractility = urine retention
- ## prescribed meds may interfere with elimination (diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers)
6
Q
Nocturia
A
the need to wake up at night to urinate
7
Q
Specific Gravity
A
a measure of the density of the urine compared with the density of water
8
Q
Hematuria
A
blood in the urine
9
Q
Dysuria
A
painful or difficult urination
10
Q
oliguria
A
24hr urine output is less than 400ml
11
Q
polyuria
A
excessive output of urine (diuresis)
12
Q
pyuria
A
pus in the urine
13
Q
urinary urgency
A
strong desire to void
14
Q
Assessing
urinary elimination
A
- measure urine output
- clean catch midstream specimen
- sterile specimen (catheterization)
- urinalysis
15
Q
Abnormal urine findings
A
- cloudiness
- protein, glucose, pus, bile, albumin, ketones, bacteria
- sweet or foul odor
- very dark in color
