2
Q

What do the pronephrons do?

A

Create a duct to the cloaca, which drives the development of the urogenital ridge

Q

Where does the uteric bud (primative ureter) develop from?

A

The mesonephric duct- which has come from the urogenital ridge

Q

Where does the uteric bud go to?

A

The metanephros- it infiltrates this and forms the calycies (collecting) part of the kidney

Q

What is the role of the primitive kidney (metanephros)?

A

It is not quite fully functional but does filter out urea and some water so be excreted into the amniotic cavity

6
Q

What happens to the embryonic kidney after infiltration with the uteric bud?

A

It will ascend to the T10/11 region by climing up the aeorta, forming and deforming new blood vessels with it as it rises

7
Q

How do you get end arteries in the kidneys?

A

If one of the blood vessels connecting the kindey to the aeorta as it rises doesnt regress, it will be an end artery as it will not anastimose. So can cause infarcts if stenosed. (Renal artery normally formes many anatomises)

Q

How does the ureter form?

A

The uteric bud migrates down the mesonephric duct and connects directly into the urogenital sinus (mesonephric duct will now regress in females)

10
Q

How is the urogenital sinus formed?

A

The cloaca (the bit at the end of the hind gut), is connected anteriorly to the umbellical cord by the allantois. The urogenital septum then grows down and split the cloaca into two tubes; hind gut (posterior) and urogenital sinus anteriorly.

Q

What is the difference between the allantois and the urachus?

A

The allantois connects the cloaca to the umbelical cord. It becomes the urachus when the urogenital ridge splits the cloaca into hindgut and urogenital sinus. The urachus connects the urogenital sinus (primative bladder) to the umbellical cord

Q

What is horseshoe kidney?

A

When the lower portions of the kidneys touch on ascent and fuse so you get one large kidney instead of two.

15
Q

Describe the formation of the vagina and uterus

A

The paramesonephric duct inserts into the base of the urogenital sinus. The paramesonephric duct forms the fallopian tubes and uterus. The urogenital sinus then enlarges to form the vagina and splits to seperate the urethra (anterior) and vagina (posterior)

16
Q

Where does the urethra form from?

A

The urogenital sinus- at first is straight tube but top dilates (to form bladder) and bottom elongates and shrinks (to form urethra- and vagina).
In males the spongey part is fomed from fusion of the genital folds.

17
Q

What are the 4 parts of the male urethra?

A
  • preprostatic
  • Prostatic
  • Membranous
  • Spongey
18
Q

How do you get ectopic urethral orifices?

A

Uteric bud can split and connect into vagina or anus, these connections dont have sphincters so lead continiously.

19
Q

What is a urorectal fistula?

A

When the cloaca isn’t split by the urogenital septum, so you get one hole for wee and poo

20
Q

What is a patent urachus?

A

When the urachus fails to regress properly, so it doesnt close and fluid can go from bladder and out through umbellicus

21
Q

What does the urachus normally become?

A

the median umbellical ligament

22
Q

What is the role of the urogenital RIDGE?

A

Development of gonads and metanephros

23
Q

What is hydrospadias?

A

Defect in fusion of urogenital folds meaning urethra opens into the ventral surface rather than at the end of the glans
