Urinary System Introduction Flashcards
Describe the location of the kidneys.
Retroperitoneal, At the level of T11/12.
Where is urine made and where is it stored.?
Made: Kidneys
Stored: Bladder
How does urine leave the kidneys?
Via the ureter smooth muscle tube.
How does the bladder empty?
Via the urethra
Describe the passage of blood through the kidney?
Blood enters via the renal artery from the abdominal aorta, works through a network of capillaries and leaves via the renal vein which is then connected to the inferior vena cava.
Give 4 functions of the kidneys.
- Regulation of key substances in extracellular fluid
- Excretion of waste products
- Endocrine functions such as synthesis of renin, erythropoietin and prostaglandins
- Metabolism functions such as active form of vit D and catabolism of insulin
What is osmolality?
Solute per kilogram of solvent.
What is osmolarity?
Number of osmoles of solute per litre.
If the extra cellular fluid is high which was does water move?
Out of the cell
What is the average output of urine per day?
1.5L of urine
Describe the passage of fluid through a nephron.
- Glomerulus
- Proximal convoluted tubule (In cortex)
- Loop of Henle (Dips in and out of medulla)
- Distal convoluted tubule (In cortex)
- Collecting duct (Passes through medulla to renal pelvis)
Name the type of epithelium lining the glomerulus.
Stratified squamous
Name the type of epithelium lining the PCT.
Simple cuboidal
Name the type of epithelium lining the DCT.
Simple cuboidal
Describe the function of the glomerulus.
Filters everything out of the blood.
