URINARY SYSTEM DRUGS Flashcards
are limited to the treatment of UTIs. Drug action occurs in the renal tubule and bladder, where it is effective in reducing bacterial growth.
Urinary Antiseptics/Anti-infectives and Antibiotics
is an infection of your urinary system. This type of infection can involve your:
- Urethra (urethritis).
- Kidneys (pyelonephritis).
- Bladder (cystitis).
urinary tract infection (UTI)
- problem peeing

dark pee
-pain in abdomen or
pelvic area, lower back
-pain while peeing

Symptoms of UTI
- exerts antimicrobial activity by blocking the reduction of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate, the active form of folic acid, by susceptible organisms. It has inhibitory activity for most gram-positive aerobic cocci and some gram-negative aerobic bacilli.
Trimethoprim and Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole
AKA: Co-Trimoxazole (TMP-SMX)
- A drug that stops the growth of bacteria in urine.
- This medication also contains an ingredient that helps to make the urine acidic. When the urine is acidic, methenamine turns into formaldehyde to kill the bacteria.
Methenamine
- Absorption: Increase w/ food
- Mechanism of action: Inactivates/ alters bacterial ribosomal proteins: Inhibition of protein synthesis
- bactericidal in urine
Nitrofurantoin
- ARE ONE OF THE GROUPS OF URINARY ANTIBACTERIALS THAT ARE EFFECTIVE AGAINST STRAINS OF ACINETOBACTER, CHLAMYDIA, CLOSTRIDIUM, KLEBSIELLA, STAPHYLOCOCCUS, AND STREPTOCOCCUS SPECIES THAT CAUSE LOWER UTIS;
Fluoroquinolones (Quinolones)
CIPROFLOXACIN, OFLOXACIN, AND LEVOFLOXACIN.
- If you experience any discomfort, your doctor may prescribe an analgesic, such as ______?, a pain-relief medication for the urinary tract.
Others include those that reduce bladder spasms and over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ________?
Urinary Analgesics
- phenazopyridine
- acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- ARE URINARY ANALGESICS THAT ARE USED TO RELIEVE THE URINARY PAIN, BURNING SENSATION, FREQUENCY, AND URGENCY OF URINATION THAT ARE SYMPTOMATIC OF CYSTITIS.
CAN ALTER THE GLUCOSE URINE TEST; THEREFORE A BLOOD TEST SHOULD BE USED TO MONITOR GLUCOSE LEVELS.
Phenazopyridine
- used to treat an overactive bladder
- by relaxing the muscle in your bladder,______? improve your ability to control your urination
- before taking, tell doctor if you have allergies to it
- reduce leaking of urine, feelings of needing to urinate right away, and frequent trips to the bathroom
