Urinary System Flashcards
The urinary system maintains homeostasis by:
- regulating blood volume, pressure, pH, and concentration (osmolarity)
- reabsorbing glucose and excreting wastes
- releasing certain hormones like renin and EPO
Kidneys
A bean shaped organ located above the waist.
Ureter
One of the two tubes that connects the kidney with the urinary bladder
Cortex
Filtrates to form urine
Medulla
Collects and excretes urine
Renal Blood Flow

Nephron
The functional unit of the kidney. Composed of blood vessels and tubules that collect and filtrate the liquid that’s becomes urine.
Bowman’s capsule
Consists of visceral and parietal layers
Visceral layer
Made from podocytes, form the inner wall of the Bowman’s capsule
Parietal layer
Outer layer of the Bowman’s capsule
The Urinary System
Consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
Renal capsule
Fibrous connective tissue that surrounds each kidney
Renal papillae
The apex of the renal pyramid
Renal Pelvis
The major calyces of the kidney converge to form an enlarged channel
Adrenal gland
Produces hormones and adrenaline
Renal artery
Brings blood to the kidney
Renal vein
Drains kidneys of blood and sends to inferior vena cava
Urinary bladder
Hollow muscular organ situated in the pelvic cavity
Urethra
Allows urine to be execrated
Renal Hilus
Where the ureter emerges from the kidney along with blood vessels lymphatic vessels and nerves
Adipose capsule
Middle layer, surrounds renal capsule
Renal Fascia
Outer layer anchors kidneys to surrounding structures
Nephron flow
Renal corpuscle, proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal tubule, collecting duct
Renal sinus
Where the hilum expands into a cavity
