URINARY SYSTEM Flashcards
Function of the Urinary System:
Removes excess minerals and other toxic substances as urea.
Parts of the Urinary System:
Renal veins, renal arteries, kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra.
Steps:
1- Unflitred blood (salts, nutrients and urea) arrives to the kidneys through renal arteries.
2- Unfiltred blood is filtred inside the kidneys by structures called nephrons.
3- Filtred blood and urea are separated, filtred blood exits the kidneys through renal veins and urea is transported to the bladder thorugh ureters.
4- When the bladder is holding around 500mL we can urinate.
Structure of the nephron:
Malrighi’s glomerulus, capsule, proximal convoluted tube, hemle’s loop, distal convoluted tube and collecting duct.
Illnesses related to the Urinary System:
- Stones: Excessive amount of minerals in the urinary tract that ends in the creation of stones in the kidney or in the urinary tract.
- Infections: Disorder of the organs or/and structures of the Urinay System caused by pathogens.
- Renal failure: Disorder in the nephrons which causes a disorder in blood filtration.
- Cancer: Abnormal cell growth that alters the normal functioning of an organ or structure.
