RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Flashcards
Introduce the process of breathing:
The Respiratory System takes oxygen from the air through a process known as breathing, it adds it into the blood and the CO2 is released.
Steps of breathing:
1- Diaphragm contracts, chest cavity expands, lungs expand and the difference in air pressure makes the air to reach the lungs (Inhalation).
2- Oxygen in the alveoli is transfered to the capillaries and CO2 in the capillaries is transfered into the alveoli through a process known as diffusion (Gas exchange).
3- Diaphragm relaxes, chest cavity reduces, lungs reduce and the pressure makes the air rich in CO2 to leave the body (Exhalation).
Parts of the Respiratory System:
Nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx, trachea, lungs, bronchus, bronchioles, alveoli and diaphragm.
Illnesses related to the Respiratory System:
-Asthma: Chronic airway inflammation of the airways characterized by narrowing or obstruction of the airways resulting on shortness of breath and/or other problems.
-Pulmonary emphysema: Disorder of the alveoli, involving poor airflow leading into less amount of O2 in blood.
-Infections: Disorder of the organ(s) and/or structure(s) of the Respiratory System caused by pathogens.
-Cancer: Abnormal cell production that alters the normal functioning of an organ or tissue.
