Urinary System Flashcards
What are the functions of the urinary system?
Maintain homeostasis, regulate blood volume pressure, pH and concentration.
What does the urinary system consist of?
Kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, nerves and blood vessels
What are the two distinct regions of the internal anatomy of The kidneys?
The cortex and Medulla
What does the cortex do and what does the medulla do?
The cortex is responsible for filtering your end, the medulla is responsible for collection and excretion of urine.
What are the renal pyramids and what do they contain?
They are the secreting apparatus and tubules of the kidneys
How do the ureters transport urine from the renal pelvis of the kidneys to the bladder?
Using the peristaltic waves
What is the act of emptying the bladder called?
Urination
This is a small tube leading from the internal urethral orifice in the bladder floor to the exterior.
Urethra
How does arterial blood into the kidneys and how does it exit?
Arterial blood enters be the renal artery and exits the renal vein
What is the functional unit of the kidney?
The nephron
The renal corpuscle consist of what to structures?
Glomerular capillaries Glomerular capsule(Bowmans capsule)
What are the three basic functions performed by nephrons and collecting ducts?
Tubule reabsorption
Tubular secretion
Glomerular filtration
What is tubular reabsorption?
The process of returning important substances from filtrate back to the body.
What is tubular secretion?
The movement of waste materials from the body to the filtrate.
What is glomerular Filtration?
Pressure forces filtration of waste laden blood in the glomerulus
Water accounts for how much of the total urine volume?
95%
What to blood tests are commonly done clinically to assess adequacy of renal function?
The blood urea nitrogen or B UN and serum creatine test
What is edema?
An excessive amount of fluid in the interstitial space can be localized or generalized causes swelling enlargement of tissues and more visible in dependent areas of the body.
