    angina, heart failure
Tachypnea, dyspnea

Anorexia, hepatomegaly, dysphagia
Bone pain
Sensitivity to cold, weight loss, lethargy

iron deficiency anemia s/s

A

Pallor – most common finding
Glossitis – inflammation of the tongue
Cheilitis – inflammation of the lips

Plus all the other; signs and symptoms related to the severity of the anemia

Diagnosis
Hemoglobin is below 14, usually see symptoms when 6-10
Other diagnostic studies such as stool guaiac
Bone Marrow Biopsy if other test are inconclusive

iron def treatment

A

Drug Therapy – Oral Iron
Give in ferrous sulfate form, best absorbed from duodenum and proximal jejunum
Best absorbed in an acidic environment – take with vitamin C
Undiluted should be drank via a straw
Side effects:
Heartburn
Constipation
Drug Therapy – parenteral iron
Given deep IM, change needles
Use Z-track technique
Do NOT massage the site after administration
