Urinary Histology Flashcards
Describe the parietal layer of the renal corpuscle. Does it undergo any change?
Parietal layer is simple squamous but becomes simple columnar at the PCT
Describe the triple layered filtration barrier on EM
Central lamina densa with lamina rara on each side
What are 6 main functions of mesangial cells that adhere to the surface of glomerular capillaries?
1) Contractile properties
2) AII receptors
3) Synthesize ECM materials
4) Structural support for glomerulus
5) Cleanse BM via phago/endocytosis
6) Produce cytokines and PGN’s
Where are the extraglomerular mesangial (Lacis) cells located?
Outside the glomerulus near vascular pole
How do the thick descending and ascending limbs of the LOH compare to the PCT?
Both proximal and distal straight tubules are similar to the PCT but with fewer microvilli
How does the histology change when the DCT makes contact with the afferent arteriole?
Cuboidal->columnar w/ densely packed nuclei to form MD
In the collecting tubules and ducts, what type of cell predominates and how does this appear?
Light (principal) cells predominate with scattered dark intercalated cells
What parts of the nephron determine the final osmolality of urine by reabsorbing water?
Connecting tubules and ducts
What does the afferent arteriole arise from?
Interlobular aa
What does the efferent a give rise to?
Peritubular capillary network
How do the stellate veins form?
Union of capillaries in outer cortical region with those from renal capsule
Which structures are lined by transitional epithelium?
Luminal surfaces of…
a) Renal calyces
b) Renal pelvis
c) Ureters
d) Urinary bladder
Describe the arrangement of SM wall of renal calyces, pelvis and ureters
Helical
What is the epithelial lining of the prostatic urethra?
Transitional epithelium
What is the epithelial lining of the membranous urethra?
(Pseudo)stratified columnar
