What are clinical manifestations of urinary calculi?
- renal colic (severe pain) which causes diaphoresis and pallor
- hematuria
- oliguria/anuria (stone is blocking the ureters which blocks urine from leaving the body)
- tachycardia and tachypnea
- increased or decreased BP
What are nursing interventions that the nurse can perform with a patients who have urinary calculi?
- assess pain
- monitor Is and Os
- strain urine to look for stones
- encourage fluids
What is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy?
the shock wave lithotripsy is a procedure where there will be a breakdown of stones into smaller pieces so that they can be passed more easily
What type of foods should be avoided in the diet if the patient has urinary calculi?
avoid oxalate sources, high phosphate foods, sodium, calcium and purine sources
what medications can be given for treatment urinary calculi?
thiazide diuretics, sodium bicarbonate, and allopurinol
what is the purpose of taking allopurinol?
prevents formation of uric acid
what is the purpose of taking sodium bicarbonate?
raises pH of urine
