Urinary Flashcards
Which kidney is lower?
Right is lower
Which part of the nephron reabsorbs the most water?
Proximal Convoluted Tube
Kidneys release what hormones?
-Calcitriol(active form if vit D, for bones)
-Renin(Raas system for controlling bp)
-Erythropoietin (stimulates RBC production in bone marrow)
8 functions of the kidneys?
-ionic composition
-bp
-blood osmolality
-blood pH
-blood V
-hormones
-glucose
-excretion
4 functions of electrolytes?
-osmosis
-acid-base balance
-electrical current
-enzyme optimal activity
4 major ions?
-Na2+ (90% of extracellular cations)
-Cl- (extracellular)
-K+ (intracellular)
-HCO3- (extracellular)
1 kidney has how many nephrons?
1 million. Same # from birth, they donβt heal. 80-85% are cortical nephrons, rest are juxtamedullary (longer loop deeper in medulla).
3 Nephron functions/stages to make urine?
-Glomerular filtration(remove from blood)
-Tubular Reabsorption( blood reabsorbs)
-Tubular Secretion(remove from blood)
Volume we micturate?
Aka urination.
1-2L per day
Characteristics of urine?
-colour
-turbidity
-volume
-odour
-pH(4.6-8)
-density
What % of urine is water?
95%
When do we get thirsty?
2% body mass loss, hypothalamus kicks in thirst.
Describe the filtration path in a nephron?
-Glomerulus(blood coil)
-Glomerular/Bowmanβs Capsule(surrounds glomerulus, together make Renal Corpuscle)
-Proximal Convulat
ed Tubule
-Descending Loop of Henle
-Ascending Loop of Henle
-Distal Convulated Tubule
-Papillary Duct
