Urethritis Flashcards
Background
Inflammation of urethra not always caused by STI.
Mainly associated with gonorrhoea.
Classified as:
- gonococcal urethritis, non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), or persistent/recurrent urethritis.
Signs and Symptoms
Be sus if there is urethral discharge, dysuria or penile discomfort.
To see if STI is likely cause ask on sexual Hx
Refer all men to genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic or other local specialist sexual health service
Unable/unwilling to go make working diagnosis if:
- mucopurulent or purulent urethral discharge (MILKY)
- 1st-void urine sample tests positive for leukocyte esterase and urinary threads (strands of mucus/ pus)
Treatment
Should be treated in 1-2 weeks.
Treat depending on type of infection i.e. if its chlamydia u treat that.
gonorrhoea treat that.
