Urethral Catheterization Flashcards
intermittent Catheterization
short period of time
only used to drain bladder
clean technique at home, sterile technique in hospital
indwelling cath
long period
continuous draining of the bladder
sterile technique
Micturition
urination
nephron
is the functional unit of the kidney, where waste products are removed and urine is formed.
renin
another hormone produced by the kidneys, plays a role in blood pressure control by regulating renal blood flow via the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS).
patient ability to urinate
The patient’s ability to void depends on feeling the urge to urinate,
being able to control the urethral sphincter, and
being able to relax during voiding
woman urinate better when squatting,
men urinate better standing
adequate fluid intake.
1 500 to 2 000 mL
symptoms that may aggravate utis
Tobacco (smoker’s cough aggravates stress urinary incontinence)
• Alcohol (acts as a diuretic)
• Substances containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and chocolate (may worsen urgency and urgency incontinence, increases frequency)
• Carbonated beverages
• Artificial sweeteners (e.g., Aspartame)
sequence for proper preinela care for indwelling
hold cathered
clean from genital area downwards away from gential
two lumen cath
(the most common type; one lumen drains urine and the other carries sterile water to inflate or deflate the balloon)
three lumen
three lumen (the third lumen allows for irrigation). The triple-lumen catheter is used for continuous bladder irrigation
cath size
The catheter size should be determined according to the size of the patient’s urethral canal.
8 to 10 Fr gauge is required for children,
10 to 12 for adult females,
12 to 16 for adult males
The smallest effective catheter size is preferred in order to prevent trauma.
alternatives for cath part 1
absorbent pads
subrapubic cath
condom cath
maintenance of skin integrity
Washing with pH-balanced soap and warm water or no rinse cleanser
Body lotion
Patients who soil their clothing should receive partial baths and dry clothing and bed linens
If fungal growth develops, a steroid or antifungal ointment may be prescribed.
alternatives for cath part 2
lifestyle mod pelvic floor training/exercise bladder training prompted voiding/timed toileting/habit retraining intermittent self cath
