They are grouped according to their use
What is the CBD
-Central Business District
-Usually in the middle of an urban area
-Usually has busy streets, many offices and shops
-Government buildings are here
-Some people live close to here
Light industry zones
-Occupy small buildings
-Don’t use heavy machinery and resources
-Examples are, Food processing and packaging, and clothing factories
Heavy industry zones
-Occupy large buildings
-Makes use of heavy machinery and bulky resources
-Examples are, Oil refineries, cement factories, and iron and steel industries
Residential areas
-Most of the land in an urban area is used as residential areas
-people live where they can afford to buy or rent property
-Residential areas that are away from the CBD are called suburbs
Shopping centres
-Most suburbs in middle & high income areas have shopping centres
-These are places with many shops and services
-Often space around for cars, taxis and other transport
Services & Recreation
-There are areas in urban settlements that are only used for services like rubbish dumps and transport facilities
-There are areas that are only used for recreation like parks, and sport stadiums
