-In 1652 the DEIC built settlements in the cape to supply passing ships with fresh water and food
-Because of its importance as a harbour Cape Town became an urban settlement
The influence of the discovery of diamonds and gold
-Gold was discovered in 1886
-Diamonds were discovered in 1860
-After the discovery of both people began moving to S.A to mine minerals and profit from them
-At first, miners lived in tents and shacks but later permanent housing was built
-The small mining camps turned into mining towns
-Railways were built to transport people and goods.
The influence of the formation of the South African union
-In 1910 South Africa broke away from England’s control
-The 1913 land act divided the land between black and white people
-90% of the land was for white people
The influence of democracy in 1994
-Since 1994 South African cities have rapidly grown
-The end of apartheid laws caused people from rural areas to migrate to cities
-Many who migrated were unskilled
-There was a shortage of housing so temporary homes were built or people lived with friends and family
