Urban Settlement Plans (Lessons 3-5) : Flashcards
What is βurban settlement patternsβ?
Where the urban areas are within a country and why, does it form a pattern?
What are 4 factors that can influence urban settlement patterns?
1) Climate and Topography
2) Transportation networks
3) Land use
4) Perceptions of Liveability
What percentage of Australians live in Urban Areas?
89%.
True or False 1% of Australiaβs land contains 84% of its population?
True ;).
What percentage of Americans live in urban areas?
70%.
Why did urban areas grow so big in Australia and the USA?
Why do people choose to live in urban areas instead of rural area?
1) Climate and topography
2) Transportation networks
3) Perceptions of liveabiltiy
4) Access to infrastructure and Services
4) Education
5) Location, (e.g. closer to jobs)
What are the 2 subcategories of βClimateβ?
Temperature & Rainfall
Why is there a less dense population in the Middle of Australia?
- Not connected to cities and coast
- Less infrastructure
- Less Jobs
- Not as many schools
- Unbearably hot weather
- Lack of rainfall (ultimately leading to lack of food and water)
How does the topography of a place effect the population density of the place?
Living in Mountain ranges is harder due to the difficulty of building infrastructure like roads and buildings, it can be done but is much more expensive and therefore not as efficient as building on flat land.
Why do many Australians live on the coast?
- Climate is less extreme
- Trade and access to goods
- Lifestyle/Aesthetics
- Access to water
- Location of Cities
What is the difference between the climate of the US and Australia?
Australiaβs is far more extreme with varying temperatures mostly being incredibly hot and barren the further inland you go, there is also frequent drought and lack of rainfall in these hot dry areas. The USβ climate is a lot better at supporting life with milder temperatures and flat land to build cities upon.
What is the difference between the east side of the US and the west?
The east side of the US is much flatter whilst the west is home to very large collections of mountain ranges and henceforth not as many cities, the east coast however has A LOT of cities/urban areas.
Why were Australiaβs main cities all built on the coast?
- Importing
- Exporting
- Immigration
- Travelling to other countries (prime location)
Give 3 reasons that transportation systems in Australia grew?
1) Transport ourselves between major cities.
2) Get food from farming areas to the cities and for export.
3) Get goods to the farming areas to keep them going.
