Aerotropolis
Settlement close to a major airport with infrastructure and economic activities linked to the airport
Boomed areas/enclosed neighbourhood
Suburban residential areas that have been blocked off with controlled access via a security control gate (boom) in order to reduce crime
Break-of-bulk point
A point where cargo is unloaded from a bulk carrier to be re-loaded into smaller units of transport
CBD (central business district)
The main commercial zone of the city
Centralise
Gathered together at a centre
Central place
An urban settlement that provides goods and services to the surrounding population
Centrifugal force
Force making objects move outwards away from a centre
Centripetal force
Force making objects move inwards towards the centre
City
A large urban centre which offers specialized services
Commute
To travel from home to work and back home on a daily basis
Conurbation
A continuous urban area formed by the merging together or several large adjoining cities and towns
Decentralisation
The movement of people and activities out of the city centre towards outer suburbs rural-urban fringe
Densification
The increased use of space both horizontally and vertically in urban areas. It leads to a greater number of residential units and increased population density
Derelict
Land that was previously used but is now abandoned, neglected or overgrown
Eco-estates
Large security control residential complexes built in accordance with green (eco-) living principles that are environmentally friendly
Edge city
A large commercial centre on the outskirts of the city offering a mixture of employment, entertainment and residential functions
