Birth rate
The number of births a year per 1000 of the population.
Death rate
The number of deaths a year per 1000 of the population.
Formal economy
The type of employment where people work to receive a regular wage, they pay tax and have certain rights e.g. sick and maternity leave.
Inequalities
Differences between poverty and wealth, as well as wellbeing and access to jobs, housing, education.
Informal economy
Employment outside the official knowledge of the government.
Megacity
A city with over 10 million people
Migration
When people move from one area to another.
Natural increase
Birth rate is higher than death rate.
Squatter settlement
An area of illegal, poor quality housing, lacking in services like water supply, sewage and electricity.
Urbanisation
An increasing percentage of a country’s population living in urban rather than rural
Urban sprawl
Growth of urban areas into the surrounding rural areas.
