What challenges are faced within Favelas?

A
  • disease spreads quickly, IMR of 50/1000. Ambulance can’t access due to bad infrastructure
  • sanitation issues, limited waste collection due to bad infrastructure, 50% lack proper sanitation
  • water availability, 10% don’t have access to clean water
  • 30% have no access to electricity. Some tap into supply illegally causing power cuts
  • houses unstable, made from waste materials
  • unemployment rates are high
  • houses at risk of landslides
  • crime rates high
  • 50% of children do not continue in education past 14

What is complexo do Alemão?

A

The largest favela in Brazil. It has been improved through pacification.

What is pacification?

A

In stage 1, Gangs Are driven out of favelas and establish police presence. In stage 2, authorities provide public services (schools, healthcare)

However, this was only small parts of the favelas so not all areas experienced improvements

What is Campo Grande?

A

A settlement of 800 houses 90 minutes drive from the city centre. For people who were compulsorily evicted for the olympics

What advantages and disadvantages are there of campo grande?

A

Houses have sanitation, clean water and electricity

Some had to give up jobs as it’s 1 and a half hours from city centre
Also lacks in schools and health centres
