Explain TWO ways by which cities can grow in size.
Multiplier effect. Economic growth encourages population growth. More labour is available and more services needed for an increasing population.
Population growth. Through rural-urban migration. Through natural increase – when birth rates are higher than death rates so population rises.
Economic development. Increase in secondary and tertiary industries leads to economic growth leading to urbanisation.
What does the term CORES (or economic core) mean?
CORES are the central region in an economy with good communications and a high population density. They are, for example, megacities.
What does the term PERIPHERY mean?
PERIPHERIES are the regions around the core that have not benefitted from globalization, global wealth, and the growth of a megacity.
What does the term GLOBAL CITY mean?
A global city is an urban centre that enjoys competitive advantages and serves as a hub within a globalised economic system.
