Urban Enviroments Flashcards
What do the terms Megacity and Millionaire city mean?
Megacity - Over 10 million people
Millionaire city - Over 1 million people
Can you identify the problems which people moving to urban areas create?
Overpopualation, housing shortages, Unemployment, Economic inequality, slums
Why do megacities grow?
Migration
Population growth / natural increase
Multiplier Effect
Economic development
Describe the Multiplier effect
Economic growth encourages populations in cities to grow. More jobs are available due to increased demand, and more services are needed for an increasing population.
Describe population growth
Through rural-urban migration and natural increase.
Describe Economies of Scale
Where larger cities have financial savings on transport and communications for both people and businesses rather than smaller cities. This is because the distances within one megacity are less than the distances between many smaller cities.
Describe Economic development
Increase in secondary and tertiary industries leads to economic growth leading to urbanisation.
Explain TWO ways by which cities can grow in size
Multiplier effect [1]. Economic growth encourages populations growth [1]. More labour is available and more services needed for an increasing population [1].
Population growth [1]. Through rural-urban migration [1]. Through natural increase – when birth rates are higher than death rates so population rises [1].
Economic development [1]. Increase in secondary and tertiary industries leads to economic growth leading to urbanisation [1].
What does the term CORES (or economic core) mean?
CORES are the central region in an economy with good communications and a high population density. They are, for examples, megacities.
What does the term PERIPHERY mean?
PERIPHERIES are the regions around the core that have not benefitted from globalization, global wealth, and the growth of a megacity.
What does the term GLOBAL CITY mean?
A global city is an urban centre that enjoys competitive advantages and serves as a hub within a globalised economic system.
