Natural Hazards Flashcards
What factors influence the vulnerability of countries to natural hazards?
Population density
Sea level/coastal areas
Location/proximity to tectonic plate boundaries
Explain how population density is a factor that can influence the vulnerability of countries to natural hazards
More people affected in the area, lots more buildings is bad for an earthquake means people can get trapped + more people die from collapsing buildings than anything else in earthquakes
Explain how sea level/coastal area is a factor that can influence the vulnerability of countries to natural hazards
Storm surges are more dangerous more water can get in the area.
Explain how location/proximity to plate boundaries is a factor that can influence the vulnerability of countries to natural hazards
More likelihood of earthquakes and volcanoes to occur as the closer you are to plate boundaries the more likely. Also if they are lots of islands then TRS can maintain their strength, living in mountains means it is hard to rescue and give aid
What is the ring of fire?
Area in pacific between Asia and North America where there are lots of destructive plate boundaries so lots of earthquakes and volcanoes
Why do people still live in these dangerous area?
Fertile soil is present near volcanoes due to volcanic ash deposits this means farmers can have high yields of crops
Can’t afford to move
Hazards aren’t dangerous enough to make them move
How do different economies change how they react to hazards
Rich countries can afford earthquake proof buildings and pay for a lot of aid, they can also spend more on educating everyone about the hazards
Poor countries can’t afford these preventions and won’t be able to pay for the aid
