The increasing population due to rural to urban migration causes a strain in the housing market which puts pressure on supply
There is a high demand for short term rentals due to tourism which pushes prices up for locals
There are many uni students in need of housing which puts pressure onto the housing market
Old houses are poorly insulated which means that people spend more money on trying to heat their homes and have less money to live
A lack of affordable housing means that it makes it difficult for lower or middle class people to try find a house they can afford
The average house prices in Glasgow are 4 or 5 times higher than average earnings
Many young people struggle to afford a first home due to the rising housing costs
The private rental market has increased and many young people and families now rent and struggle to save enough to buy a house
Explain the strategies used to manage housing in edin (8 marks)
Building new apartments, 452 luxury apartments have been built on a brownfield sight eg platinum point. Too expensive
Refurbishing old tenement buildings into desirable accom, facilities like central heating and bathrooms have been improved eg easter road, increases house prices
Build new affordable homes, eg habour gateway, 234 mid market rental apartments have been built as part of a national housing trust, rent is kept at reasonable level. Mid market meaning more can afford to live there, priority is given to current residents which prevents outbidding
Build new community, eg western habour, plans to develop the rest of the area and build 1500 homes with a primary school, doctors surgery, and a park. Amenities can be used by the local community improving the standard of living
Convertions of warehouses, old abandoned whiskey warehouses have been regenerated and brought back into use as flats, eg commercial street, residents can no longer afford house prices and are forced to move away
Port of leith housing association built 62 new homes for mid market rent, and 32 homes for social rent by edin council. Provides affordable housing
Explain the need for traffic management in edinburgh (10 marks)
Congestion caused by roadworks leads to the longest waiting times in the uk, this leads to an increase in air pollution which can cause health problems like asthma
Edinburgh was originally built for horse and carriage, the roads aren’t wide enough for cars so they would have to take alternative routes
Big festivals like the fringe would result in road closures which leads to cars tsking other routes and those routes becoming busier than usual
The bypass isnt big enough for all the cars that need to use it
Comment on the effectiveness of strategies to manage transport in Edinburgh (10 marks)
Introduced bus lanes, reduced commuting times by bus, encourages people to use public transport over cars, 65km of them have been built over the town. Although it restricts movement on the existing road lyout which reduces capacity for other road users
Park and ride, buses take passengers into the CBD preventing cars from travelling inti the city. Eg ingliston park and ride has space for 550 cars. Saves car journeys
Upgrading of public transport experince, buses accept contactless payment, apps provide up to date tracking times, include USB ports, wifi on board and better seating. Makes people happier to use bus, decreases amount of cars in CBD
Trams being introduced, frequent services, electrified system reduces noise and air pollution, allows connections for onward transport, run all day.
New built bridge, with public transport and private cars using old bridge, bridge has improved traffic flow and reduced commuting times from fife into the city
Introduced pedestrianised areas, removes traffic from the CBD, safer for shoprs and reduce pollution
Traffic calmning, introduced 20mph speed limit, implemented on all residential streets, main shopping areas, city centre streets, roads with high levels of pedestrian. Makes it safer for pedestrians, and less collisons
Parking charges, rising prices for pay and display meters will deter care uses and encourage them to use public transport, prices up to £8.20 per hour on george street

Narrow streets limit access for services eg police
Open sewers in the streets, could lead to diseases
Areas of stagnang and polluted water likely to catch disease
Lack of refuge colllection can lead to water supplies becoming unsanitary
Overcrowding means that personal space is limited annd privacy
