Urba Land Use Flashcards
What is a settlement and what are land use zones
A place where people live
Areas of a city that have been developed mainly as commercial, residential and industrial
What is the meaning of commercial, residential and industrial
Commercial - for shops and businesses which provide services
Residential - a place where people live but will have to travel to work somewhere else
Industrial - Has factories, office complexes, workshops and science parks
What are 5 land use zones in a city
1.Central Business District
2.Inner City
3.Suburbs
4.Industrial Zone
5.Rural-urban fringe
CBD-what is land used for, what are buildings like and why is it located here?
What is land used for:
-Shops and offices making the centre of business and commerce
-Transport: all transport links lead to it making it the most accessible part of the city.
What are buildings like:
-High/multi storey buildings such as shopping malls, entertainment offices, banks.
-Many cultural/historical buildings e.g. castles, museums. These tend to be the oldest and represent some of the original buildings as the settlement grew.
Why is it located there:
-a central location for roads and railways to converge.
-the most accessible location for workers
-accessible to most people for shops and businesses.
However, with increased traffic the CBD can become very congested and this has led to streets becoming pedestrianised.
Inner city-where is it, what is land used for, what are buildings like and why is it located here?
Where is it:
-It is located next to the CBD
What is the land used for:
-The land here is mainly used for residential purposes. Normally high population density (lots of people in a small area).
-In the past there may have been some factories located here.
What are buildings like?
-Poor quality housing. It has mainly terraced houses in a grid like pattern.
-Multiple occupancy is common as houses are often subdivided into flats.
Why is it located here:
-Houses were originally built to house factory workers who worked in the inner city factories and walked to work.
Suburbs-what is land used for, what are buildings like and why is it located here.
Where is it:
The suburbs are located outside the inner city on the edge of a city
What is the land used for
-The suburbs tend to have a residential land use although some suburbs have light manufacturing industries
What are buildings like:
-single family homes and low population densities.
-They tend to be detached or semi detached homes than inner city terraces
-most have a garden and the roads around them are arranged in cul-de-sacs and wide avenues.
Why is it located here:
-The land is slightly cheaper so houses can be bigger.
-They are often home to commuters who need access to the CBD along main roads and railways although some suburbs are now areas of light manufacturing industries.
-Most residents of the suburbs tend to have high proportion of car ownership to allow them to move within the city. As most residents work in other land use zones, suburban streets tend to be quiet during the day.
Industrial zones - what is land used for, what are buildings like and why is it located here
Where is it:
-Older industries are found in the inner cities as the city has grown around them.
-More modern industrial zones are found on the outskirts
What is the land used for:
-The industrial zone has land that is used for industry
What are buildings like:
-Older industries in the inner city: The buildings here are likely to be older and will be surrounded by housing which originally would have accommodated their workers.
-More modern industrial zones: Buildings are more modern.
Why is it located here:
-Older industries are often linked to transport links such as railways and canals.
-More modern industrial zones rely on motorway transport to bring in raw materials and the workers and to distribute the finished product.
Rural urban fringe-what is land used for, what are buildings like and why is it located here
Where is it:
-Around the edge of a city
What is the land used for:
-It is neither rural nor urban
-It is common to have mixed landuse such as some housing, golf courses, business parks and airports
What are the buildings like:
-Any housing is likely to be detached houses.
-Typical for recycling facilities, park and ride, airports, large hospitals.
-However, the rural-urban fringe is largely open countryside although it is generally of poor quality with badly maintained hedgerows and woodland.
Why is it located here:
-Due to Urban Sprawl (when a city or town spreads out into the surrounding countryside, covering what was once farmland, woodland or wetlands with buildings and infrastructure)
There is competition for land here:
Large space is attractive to developers
People may want a rural/ countryside lifestyle
Conservations want to protect the land
