The rising of vendemiaire
A
- Occurred in October 1795
- Shows the extent to which royalism had grown since the terror
- Directory had only been able to establish itself thanks to the action of the army in crushing the revolution showing how vulnerable the constitution was
- General Hoche and the army were called called upon in 1795-96 to deal with the remaining pockets of royalist sentiment in the vendee and the west
- January 1797 royalist Brotier was arrested and deported to cayenne for planning a military rising in Paris to overthrow the government

The end of the vendeen and chouan rebellion
A
- Had been largely crushed before the directory was set up
- Few scattered pockets of vendeean and chouan resistance remained
- Hoche maintained well disciplined mobile army units in the area and used them to establish firm control over the whole of the west by the summer of 1796 when a peace treaty was signed
