  • April 1796 Piedmont Sardinia withdrew for the war of the 1st coalition by the armistice of cherasco
  • Gave savoy and Nice to France
  • Faced the Austrians at lodi in May
  • Although this was a fight with Austrian rear guards Napoleons bravery was well published
  • Milan was occupied and its art treasures were pillaged
  • Pope and king of Naples signed rapid treaties with Frances and payed indemnities to avoid a potential France takeover
  • Advanced southwards to take Mantova,Peschiera, verona e legnago
  • Struggled for 8 months to take mantua
  • May 1797 napoleon’s docs occupied Venice
