Upper vs lower motor neuron signs Flashcards
Hyperreflexia
Upper motor
Increase in muscle stretch reflexes
Clonus
Upper motor
Rhythmic contraction of antagonist muscles that have opposite effect on the joint
Hypertonia
Upper motor
Increased tone of skeletal muscles
Extensor plantar reflex
(Babinski)
Upper motor
Toes fan rather than flexing
Hypotonia
Lower motor
Decrease in muscle stretch reflexes
Hyporeflexia
Lower motor
Decreased motor tone of skeletal muscles
Skeletal muscle atrophy
Lower motor
Fasiculations
Lower motor
Isolated muscle twitch
Muscle stretch reflexes
Extensor muscle stretching causes increased extensor tone and decreased flexor tone.
Rigidity
Same resistance with flexion and extension.
No change with increase in speed.
Spasticity
Resistance in one direction different than the other direction (flexion/extension)
Increased resistance with increased speed.
Ataxia
Loss of control in arms and legs. Leads to gait disturbance and lack of balance.
Apraxia
Difficulty planning and executing coordinated motor movements.
