What causes acute epiglottitis?
Haemofilus influenzae type B
Type A B-haemolytic Strep. Pyogenes
Sometimes viruses
What is Coryza?
The common cold, inflammation of the mucous memebrane inthe nose
What is croup?
A generally viral infection causing swelling in the windpipe leading to breathing prpblems and hoarse voice
What are the signs of Otitis Media?
A bulging eardrum
Red (erythema) eardrum, instead of the usual pink
How should we treat Otitis Media?
With analgesia (pain relief)
Why dont we bother with antibiotics for for most cases of Otitis Media?
They make no difference in most cases because theyre viral. And so cause more side effects (e.g. diarrhoea) than they help.
How would we treat bacterial tonsilitis/pharyngitis?
Penicillin
Why wouldnt we give Amoxicillin for Tonsilitis/Pharyngitis?
Because if its caused by ebstein-Barr Virus then it would cause an amoxicillin rash

Parainfluenza Type 1
Compare the prevalence of Croup and Epiglottitis:
Croup is quite common whereas epiglottitis is rare
What causes epiglottitis?
Haemophilis Influenzae Type B
Compare the wellness of people with croup & epiglottitis?
Croup sufferers appear well and healthy
Epiglottitis sufferers are described as “toxic” they are visibly ill
What are the symptoms of Croup?
Stridor
Hoarse voice
Barking Cough
What are the symptoms of Epiglottitis?
Stridor
Drooling
