What is sarcoidosis?
A multi System granulomatous disorder.
Non-Caseating Epithelioid & Giant cell granulomas form with variable associated fibrosis and occasional necrosis.
What is a likely cause of Sarcoid?
Type 4 hypesensitivity reaction though no ones sure what causes it.
In whom does sarcoidosis occur most often?
Young adults, often women
What are the common resp. symptoms of sarcoidosis?
Shortness of Breath
Cough
What other symptoms/signs may be present with sarcoid?
Acute Arthralgia
Erythema Nodosum
Bilateral Hilar Lymphadenopathy
What tests are done when sarcoid is suspected?
A CXR
Serum Ca++ & ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) [elevation of either indicates sarcoid]
Biopsy
How do we treat sarcoid?
Mostly its left and clears up withing ~2 years.
Can be treated with corticosteroids.
