Azelastine brand names
Astelin, Astepro
Azelastine indication/dosage
treat symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis and seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children >12y: 2 sprays in each nostril BID
Priming required on first use and if lapse between doses >3 days
Azelastine mechanism
H1-blocker, blocks histamine release in peripheral tissues
Azelastine drug interactions
other CNS depressants may increase drowsiness
cimetidine may increase effects
Azelastine CI/precautions
CI: hypersensitivity
caution when performing tasks requiring alertness
Azelastine pregnancy category
C
Azelastine ADR’s
bitter taste in mouth, headache, drowsiness, nasal burning, pharyngitis, dry mouth, sneezing, nausea, rhinitis, fatigue, dizziness, nosebleed, weight increase
Azelastine patient education
may cause drowsiness, operate accordingly
prime with first use and if >3 day lapse between doses
store with pump unit tightly closed
