symptomatic relief of cough: 100mg TID PRN
Not indicated for children

Benzonatate mechanism
peripheral anesthetizes stretch receptors in respiratory passages, lungs, and pleura by dampening activity, thus reducing cough reflex
Benzonatate drug interactions
None known
Benzonatate CI/precautions
Caution: allergy to anesthetic agents in para-aminobenzoic acid class (procain, tetracaine)
Severe life-threatening reactions, such as CV collapse and bronchospasm, have occured from chewing or sucking capsule
overdose may result in death
Benzonatate pregnancy category
C
Benzonatate ADR’s
drowsiness, headache, constipation, nausea, pruritis, nasal congestion, sensation of burning in eyes
Benzonatate patient education
SWALLOW CAPSULES WHOLE!!! do not chew or disolve, may be life-threatening
do not exceed prescribed dosage, may cause death
contact physician if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing shortly after dose

Hydrocodone: narcotic, depresses cough reflex center in medulla oblongota
Chlorpheniramine: H1 histamine antagonist with anticholinergic activity

MAO-Is, TCAs, and CNS depressants

CI: hypersensitivity
Caution: postoperative patients, patients with pulmonary disease, obstructive bowel disease, increased ICP, or head injury, patients with renal/hepatic impairment, narrow-angle glaucoma, asthma, prostatic hypertrophy, Addison’s disease
