What dietary factors damage the gastric mucosa?
Smoking
Drinking alcohol
red or black pepper ( chili powder, sauce etc)
what is the major medical therapy for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease?
2 week triple therapy - 2 antibiotics + 1 proton pump inhibitor
or
2 week Quadruple therapy - all the above plus a cytoprotective agent such as bismuth (pepto bismal)
Stop taking aspirin if it caaused it
What is the recommended MNT for a person with dumping syndrome?
Eat 5-6 small meals instead of 3 large ones
Delay liquid intake until 30 mins post postprandial
High protein (1.5 - 2 g/kg)
Minimal hypertonic sweets and added sugars
Complex CHOs as tolerated
Soluble fiber
Moderate fat
Increase thickness of foods by adding pectin
Lie down or avoid activity 30 mins after eating
Lactose free foods if needed
What is the recommended MNT for a person with gastroesophageal reflux disease?
Lose weight (if overweight) Eat small frequent meals Reduce fat intake Avoid eating 3-4 hours before bed esp high fat meals Avoid lying down after meals Dont eat prior to exercise Elevate head when sleeping (only works for some) Avoid tight fitting clothes
How do you neutralize gastric acid secretions with food and specific macronutrients?
Yogurt, Milk, red wine and green tea
Protein has initial buffering effect
What causes hypoglycemia in patients with a gastrectomy?
Rapid glucose absorption and increased insulin causes hypoglycemia
