Stomatitis:
Inflammation of the oral mucosa

A

Signs:
redness and painful ulcers in the mouth, esophagus, tongue, gums, and all areas of the upper GI tract
Treatments:
Viscous lidocaine for pain “magic mouthwash”
aspiration precautions, elevated HOB & oral suction
antimicrobials
antivirals (acyclovir)
antifungals (nystatin)
combo meds are “swish and swallow”
avoid alcohol mouthwash & lemon glycerin swabs
remove dentures, dental care
encourage food that is high in protein & vitamin C
Avoid foods that are spicy, salty, hot, hard, acidic & have sharp edges

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD):
Acid and GI contents chronically reflux from stomach into the esophagus causing inflammation

A

Signs:
dyspepsia
regurgitation with sour taste
nausea
abdominal/chest pain
dysphagia
globus (feeling lump in throat)
cough
laryngitis
asthma symptoms
Interventions:
eat 4-6 small meals and stay up-right for at least 2 hours
limit spicy, acidic & fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, carbonation, peppermint & alcohol
Avoid CCBs, anticholinergics & smooth muscle relaxers
avoid nsaids & aspirin
sleep on left side with HOB 30 degrees
avoid tight clothing and weight gain and quit smoking

medications:
topical pain meds

possible enteral or parenteral feeds
No hot foods
No alcohol or caffeine
