- Do not shave area (EBP)

AM BEFORE SURGERY, PM BEFORE SURGERY, AM OF SURGERY
-Take out piercings
-No lotions or perfumes
-Avoid pets
Food & Drink
-NPO after midnight or atleast 8 hours before surgery
-Sip of clear liquids to take approved medications
-EBP suggest no food for 6-8 hours, but clear liquids ok till up to 2 hours
Emergency Surgery
surgery that must be done IMMEDIATELY to save a patient’s life, limb, or ability to function
Urgent Surgery
must be done within 24 to 48 hours
Ablative surgery
surgery to remove tissue from an organ or area of the body
Palliative surgery
for comfort, to decrease pain, to increase quality of life
Minimally invasive surgery
surgery performed through very small openings in the skin
Physical preparation
-Gown and socks
-anti embolic stockings (EBP)
-pneumatic compression devices (EBP)
-warm blankets (EBP)
-secure personal items
-IV
-on call medications
-prophylactic antibiotic (EBP)
-Bowel and bladder preparation
-skin preparation & protection
clippers and CHG (EBP)
-Time out
mark the site with “yes or no” (EBP)
