What is dyspepsia?
combination of symptoms indicating an upper GI problem
What is dyspepsia usually present as?
- Epigastric pain or burning
- Early satiety and post-prandial fullness
- Belching
- Bloating
- Nausea
- Discomfort in the upper abdomen
What is peptic ulcer disease?
break in the epithelial lining of the stomach or duodenum
What are the symptoms of peptic ulcer disease?
- Recurrent epigastric pain related to eating
- Early Satiety
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Potential anorexia and weight loss
What is the most common symptom of both gastric and duodenal ulcers?
epigastric pain (gnawing or burning sensation and occurs after meals)
What are the signs of peptic ulcer disease?
- Epigastric tenderness
- Pointing sign
- pain may radiate through back with duodenal ulcers
What can peptic ulcer disease lead to?
blood loss and consequent anaemia, can also perforate
When is there pain in duodenal ulcers? Why?
- Pain 2-3 hours after eating
- More commonly awakens patients at night
- Following a meal, the pylorus closes – relieves duodenal ulcers
When is there pain in gastric ulcers?
Pain shortly after eating
Is there weight gain in duodenal ulcers?
Often overeat - weight gain
Is there weight gain is gastric ulcers?
often avoid eating - weight loss
What can form an ulcer?
anything that damaged the mucosa
What causes the symptoms of an ulcer?
anything that increases pH of the environment around ulcer
What is the precursor of pepsin?
pepsinogen
What foods are like pepsin?
pineapple contain bromelain which acts like pepsin
