What is assimilation?
Adopting ways of the dominant society; example: adapt European ways of dress, customs, etc.
Cherokee were offered if they would assimilate, they would not have to be removed west of the Mississippi River.

Something to be thankful for; blessing, benefit.

What is a treaty?
A formally concluded and ratified agreement between countries.
Some Native American tribes signed treaties with the US government, others did not.

President Thomas Jefferson purchased this North American land from France in 1803, doubling the size of the United States.

All of present-day Oklahoma, and parts of present-day Nebraska and Kansas– that Native Americans were removed to; some Native Americans were already on this land and were resentful.

The Seminoles knew the land well and could ambush American soldiers, as well as burn the crops and homes of American settlers.

A Native American tribe that was willing to assimilate more than other tribes– yet was forced on the Trail of Tears west of the Mississippi River anyway, to Indian Territory, as part of the Indian Removal Act.

Leader of Sauk tribe, but was also willing to lead Fox tribe back from west of Mississippi, after they had moved there (along with Shawnee, Potawatomi tribes)– they had signed a treaty to do so, but faced starvation and moved back.
Who was General Winfield Scott?
Was sent by President Andrew Jackson to Georgia and Alabama, along with 7000 federal troops; he sent Cherokee to camps– while they were there, he has their villages looted.
What was the Indian Removal Act of 1830?
A law that was passed removing Native Americans from their ancestral lands and sending them west of the Mississippi River; Jackson ignored the Supreme Court’s decision.
The Supreme Court said the act was unconstitutional.
What was the Trail of Tears?
The long forced march westward as part of Indian Removal; thousands died along the way.
What was the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo?
This treaty officially ended the Mexican-American War.
It was signed on Feb. 2, 1848 in the town of Guadalupe-Hidalgo.
