Untitled Deck Flashcards
What are the types of postural deviations?
Hyperkyphosis (Humpback), Hyperlordosis (Swayback), Scoliosis (S or C Curves), Rotoscoliosis (Twisting or Rotation)
What is the definition of postural deviations?
Normal curvatures of the spine are over developed, resulting in reduced resiliency and strength rather than enhancing it.
What causes postural deviations?
Multiple causes such as bone density, environmental exposures, genetic predisposition, postural compensation, especially at the cranium and sacrum.
What are the differences between structural and functional postural deviations?
Early stages involve soft tissue pulling the spine out of alignment (functional problem). Structural changes occur when stresses pull in one direction, leading to permanent changes.
What is hyperkyphosis?
A curvature of the spine over 45 degrees is considered a deformity. Under 75 degrees, no surgery is required.
What can cause hyperlordosis?
Can be freestanding or the result of obesity, disc disease, or spondylolisthesis.
What is scoliosis?
When the spine deviates by more than 10 degrees to one side or the other.
What is rotoscoliosis?
Scoliosis involving spinal rotation.
What is Scheuermann’s Disease?
Also known as Scheuermann’s kyphosis, it occurs in male adolescents and causes rounded upper back due to wedging of vertebrae.
What are some symptoms of Scheuermann’s Disease?
Tiredness, muscle stiffness, redness on the skin, pain during activities, muscle spasms, difficulty exercising, back pain, limited flexibility, tight hamstrings, feeling off-balance.
What is the difference between convex and concave curves?
Convex: Curve opens outward. Concave: Curves inward.
