This category applies to presentation in which symptoms characteristic of a mood disorder that cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning predominate but do not at that time of the evaluation meet the full criteria for any of the disorders in either the bipolar or the depressive disorders diagnostic classes and in which it is difficult to choose between unspecified bipolar and related disorder and unspecified depressive disorder.
