Allegory
a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.

Alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Allusion
an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.

Amplification
the way a writer embellishes a sentence in order to emphasize or exaggerate certain points.
Anagram
a word or phrase that a writer can form from using the same letters in another word or phrase by shuffling the order of the letters
Anastrophe
the inversion of the usual order of words or clauses.
Anecdote
a short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person
Anthropomorphism
the attribution of human characteristics or behaviour to a god, animal, or object.
Antithesis
positions opposite ideas parallel to each other.
Aphorism
a short, pithy statement offering instruction, truth, or opinion

Archetype
a primordial image, character, or pattern of circumstances that recurs throughout literature and thought consistently enough to be considered a universal concept or situation

resemblance of sound between syllables of nearby words

the omission or absence of a conjunction between parts of a sentence.

Authorial Intrusion
authors may use to communicate directly with their reader, speaking to them as themselves rather than through the guise of a character’s dialogue to comment on the story

the practice of foretelling the future by interpreting a randomly chosen passage from a book, especially the Bible.
